Did a gauge cluster swap, tach and speedo not working
1994 XJ, 4.0. I swapped my dummy lights for gauges and the tach and speedo aren't working. I'm not sure if the donor cluster worked before installing it. Did I get a bad cluster or is there something else that could be causing this?
If you had a dummy light cluster and went to gauages then you need to install the corresponding sensors for those gauges. A dummy cluster has dummy sensors whereas a gauged cluster has gauged sensors and they don't intermix and work properly.
As far as tach and speedo - atm idk without seeing the back of the cluster or understanding what year the donor cluster came from

yeah I know I need the oil and temp senders but I’m not concerned with those gauges right now. I’m only talking about Speedo and Tach
afaik it came from a 91-96, which is the correct year range
SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER INOPERATIVE
(1) Check for continuity in the wire between the vehicle speed sensor and cluster connector pin A5.
(2) With the ignition switch in the ON position, check for battery voltage across pin A8 (B+) and pin B2 (ground).
This part requires the DRB test tool so you may not be able to perform it.
(3) Perform vehicle speed sensor test. Refer to the appropriate vehicle Diagnostic Test Procedures manual.
(4) If all the previous tests prove good, replace speedometer/odometer
You could swap in the old speedo to test to see if it works. You would only loose the resettable ODO. This might help pinpoint if there's an issue in the cluster, assuming your old speedo worked.

Section 8e has the cluster.
thanks for the reply! I should’ve thought to look for the manual. This might be beyond my skill level but at least I know where to start. Interestingly the tachometer needle did move a little bit when I revved the engine, but not a lot, which makes me think it’s mechanical?
I would check the inside of both connectors to make sure they're clean just in case it's an electrical issue (bad contacts). Make sure the screws holding in the gauges are tight as well.
I would start with cleaning the connector, especially on the cluster side. Then check continuity between the pins on the connector and the gauge "screws"

Any progress? I want to upgrade my 1996 XJ from the "low-line" instrument panel to the "high-line" cluster which includes the following gauges:
• coolant temperature gauge
• fuel gauge
• oil pressure gauge
• speedometer/odometer
• tachometer
• trip odometer
• voltmeter.
For some reason I was hoping to not have to install any different senders/sensors under the hood.
