Haven't been able to find covers for my 01 limited with the leather seats. Only reason for covers are the outside of the drivers seat has cracked apart, and the rear section is splitting at the seams.
I would hate to see it go too but I can always build another.
Good news is I can reuse the pistons but rings, bearing and lifters will be getting replaced. If it wasnt for the stupid cracked head, I would be in the rebuild under $150. And that would be for name brand parts, not cheap china junk. Also helps having leftover spare Jeep parts.
Are the skirts good enough wear wise that no knurling is needed?

Yep that they are. The skirt coating is still there for the most part. Typically when the coating is all gone, the pistons are gone too. I am going to measure them just to be sure but I am pretty confident that they will be fine.

The only thing that caught my eye was it looked like the cylinders could be scored judging from the piston head and the rings. But I have seen pistons like that and the cylinders be just fine.

Ya surprisingly the cylinder walls were not scored. I dont have much feeling left in my fingers but they felt smooth to me! I am going to ball hone it tonight and measure to see if they are out of round so we shall see what the outcome is. Just hoping there are no rust pits from the water sitting in there for some time.

Yeah, rust can be a problem. A dull pocket knife could help feel for grooves. But it also sounds like you might be able to see them if you just hit it with the hone for a couple seconds and pull it back out to look, they should show up then if there are any. I'm surprised how good those bearings look considering how the piston and rings look. lol

Yep thats the plan, quick hone and take a look. The shadows will appear if there is anything bad going on.
As good as the bearings look, they are still bad. I mean they had literally zero material wear but they stuck to the crank when I popped the rods out. When I slid them back in the rods, they were loose and would fall out. Rod and main bearings are a whopping $60 so replacing them is cheap insurance.

I should have titled my build thread - Jeep I never should have bought. I put the dingle berry down the worst 3 holes. And guess what? All bad. So lets throw pulling the engine and buying new pistons on the list. Awesome.

True.

FIFY. Seriously though, that's one of the reasons I have as much "uncompleted" or "not even started" projects on my Jeep. The anklebone's connected to the shin bone and there's a hole in the bucket, dear liza, dear liza. So I just wait until I have everything I need for..... A FEW projects and then wind up decommissioning the jeep for a weekend to complete the one I originally intended to complete in the first place.

What kind of side dish is appropriate to serve with a plate of Awesome like that? lol...
I feel your pain.... although not as bad at this point. Right after I got my XJ that was rust free.... come to find out that's about the only thing that the PO got right about it. In the first few weeks, felt like I was going down that same hole and wondering if it would ever end.... well it doesn't is the answer... but at least slowed the bleeding lol. Hope it doesn't get much worse for your build.
