Grand Cherokee Ask the Question Thread
That Krylon Fusion spray paint is for plastic but, as an aside, they claim that it's great for wood, metal, ceramic...
I think I'd be willing to do this. Especially if it takes away the hassle of having to shuttle the wheels around, from town to town and one shop to another. This way I can do them all at home and then let the tire shop have at them - one trip only - and not spending more than I need to.
I'm glad I asked. Great chatting with you guys. Thanks again for making me take another look at this.

It definitely adds a better look to them. I actually like the metalic look on them as well. Something to consider when I do the other two sets I have to paint.

Okay SteveMongr. That's surprising. Ya' got me there. If that's your handiwork with rattle-can spray paint (assumed) then I'm impressed. But really, the wheels I obtained have those ugly aluminum/clearcoat blems, blisters and discoloration in a few areas. Can you really clear away those blems, without damaging the surfaces, and spray paint them effectively? How long does the paint hold-up before it flakes/peels again?
The only flaking of the Rustoleum Metallic Midnite Black was where I did not fully remove the blisters from clear coat. Has held up for 4 years on the XJ with minor retouches. Metallic paints are thought to be tougher due to metal flake content.
For the chrome grill I sanded it using 1200 grit and used plastic primer then metallic black. Both rattle can

Yeah I've blacked all my grilles on all but three of my seven grands I've had. Just not a huge fan of chrome bits on my vehicles. I like black more lol.

You guys! Just keep in mind that aluminum castings are porous and the clearcoat helps seal the air in the tire-mounting area. I know a guy who bead-blasted the entire wheel to clean it, then had air leaks. As long as the inside of the wheel has a good coating, you're good to go.

Yeah but sadly I have also seen it alot of times that clear coat tends to corrode and bubble inside the wheel. Then you're forced to hit them with a wire wheel and bead seal the crap out of them with the rubber bead sealer. With the moisture and weather and salt in upstate new york, it takes it's tole on wheels.

That is good to know Dave. I do not mess with the wheel beyond the face and rim edge. If wheel is corroded where the bead mates to wheel, I usually ditch the wheel.

Yessir. There are some old logging trails up there but they haven't been used in years and I have no clue where to even point the jeep to get started... Will have to walk it first. It's a buddies land that I just moved onto, he drove his frontier in the woods about three years ago, had to clear some stuff when he went but I'm sure it's grown in again since then. His truck was stock ride height and had a longer wheel base than the jeep so I should be okay.

Wandered in a bit today. Got to where i wasnt able to go anymore , flexed it a bit on a little stream. Will have to clear the trail more.
I have a 2003 Grand Cherokee limited addition with a 45RfG transmission.. I'm looking to replace the cheepie plastic plated that goes around the shift and fwd. lever. It's the one with the D,R etc. markings on it. The dealer said I had to buy the whole console unit for $900 dollars. Is that right. Any suggestions?
