The awd thing is due to the transfer case but I'm only sure about the 42RE trans and how that looks, not sure on the others but if the pan on the trans is close to square, and has a notch in one corner of the pan, that's the 42RE. Couldn't say what years would work but I imagine it should be the same if u find the same trans that's in yours. Even if you may need to swap some electrical connectors from one to the other. Early 2000 should be the same as the 99 but they changed alot of the wiring on the later 2000 jeeps.

I was kinda guessing the same thing. That if it's within a year or two it's probably the same transmission. My pan does have the notch like you said. Thank you for the information.

You're very welcome, I actually have a 99 and a 2000 and a 2001, so I could look at them visually and see what they look like compared to each other.

Okay so.... From a visible inspection of the transmissions in all three of my 4.0 jeeps, a 99, a 00, and a 01, they all look identical to one another. So I called a local salvage yard to get a interchange on the transmission and they're saying that only a 99 will work, but don't know why that is... I called my local dodge dealership and they don't know what years will work and don't know the differences either.... That was the parts dept though... Said they call yards as well for that type of info.

Waiting on a call back from a transmission guy that has helped me in the past with one of my old jeeps. Called the service dept at Chrysler and they said they figure if they're visibly the same they should in theory be the same and should work, but that you may in fact need to change some electronics if they're different.

thank you man. Everything that I've read online has said the the same thing about having to change some electronics depending on what year your trying to go to.

Yeah, though at that point, the yard would likely charge you for the transfer case as well. If you're calling them to order a trans and it's a yard that pulls the part, you'll likely only get the trans and have to re-use your existing t-case as they'd likely seperate them. Unless you tell them both but if it comes down to that being the reason it's difficult to find one, being you're searching for one that's awd, that's a easy fix. That will limit your search results and make it harder to find. I just sold a selec trac transfer case to a guy that's got the quatra trac and they're easy enough to pull off so don't let that one thing limit your searching. If need be you could easily pop your t-case onto another trans

That's something I'm not sure of either. Luckly the only issue I've had to date having owned 7 wj's with the trans, turned out to be a issue with the wrong year pcm being in the jeep when I got it and that causing miscommunication and tripping the over temp light. Easy fix , sadly took months to figure out.

yea im gonna have to do some calling around. I figure if I can find and swap a transmission, the transfer case cant be that hard. what would be the differences in a awd transfer case and say the one you just sold?

The selec trac has the option for 2wd, part time 4wd, 4 high and 4 low. Low gear is lower than that of the quatra drive transfer case, and that's pretty much what I know about the difference.
The guy that bought my t-case also bought the drive shafts with it, so I'm unclear if there is a difference in those or not.

You're very welcome. So , got a call back from my transmission guy. He's saying a 96-99 works without changing anything. If you get to the newer ones you have to rewire the harness inside the transmission and replace the pressure sensor to that of the older one. A 95 works as well, however... the torque converter and flywheel are different so you'd have to re-use your torque converter as well. Or change out the flywheel from the 95 to yours. So... 95-99 are the same transmission inside and out, electronics included.
