Exclamation rear knocking sound coming from rear of my xj

hey thanks for looking at my thread!

I am having a problem with my xj, just the other day i noticed a loud knock coming from the rear end. i pulled it into the garage and started checking everything i cant see anything making the sound..i checked inside the xj and cleaned everything out and went for another drive. The sound was still there, i went home and started shacking the truck side to side while holding onto the wheel and could hear the knocking and could also feel the drives side tire moving slighly. went around to the pass side and could feel the same thing but not as extreme.

i rolled the truck a head over night while sitting in the garage and returned the next morning and went for a drive only to find it not making noise or having any play.......The knock is now back and i can feel it in the tire again. this problem seems to come and go as it pleases. its also really annoying to drive as it sounds like the wheels are going to fall off.
i also check the lugs on the tires there not loose.

does anyone know what could cause this problem? The jeep has 5.5 inch lift and 33x12.5 tires

Have you considered raising the rear of the vehicle, supporting it with jack stands, and removing the wheels?

Check the rear shock mounts at the top? I've had one of the bolts break and the shock looks like it is in position but is actually knocking around when vehicle is moving.

ill check the shock mounts tomorrow and im also going to be hanging the jeep in the air tomorrow. the sound i hear is deff coming for the rear drivers side wheel. with it sitting on the ground i can shake the jeep side to side and can hear and feel it in the rear wheel knocking and moving. then i can drive around the block park in the same spot in the shop. and shake the jeep once more side to side and it will be solid as can be.

pop the drum off and make sure the drum or shoes aren't popping, I've seen dumber stuff happen, just something quick to check

check the exhaust hanger for play by the T-case. Might be knocking there.
