Yesterday I was changing out my extremely worn and ruined motor mounts and as I'm sure many of you are aware, this necessitates removing the oil filter adapter housing on the passenger side to be able to get the mounting bolt out.
Well that all went down with no problems, even getting the OFA off wasn't all that bad. That said, I wasn't about to put it back together with that old, squished and hard o-ring on the shaft, so I ran down to the auto parts store and got the Dorman kit that the guy told me had the required o-ring in. It was a little bigger than I expected, but fit in the opening with a little oil and some convincing with the edge of a pick (not the pointy end!). Once in, I didn't have any problems and the shaft would spin easily enough.
So here are my questions;
1) I looked and looked, but I didn't see any other O-rings, just grooves where the shaft that goes into the housing goes and again, same concept of where the housing body meets the block. No other O-rings were there when it came off as far as I could tell.
2) When screwing the housing bolt back in I ensured that I started the threads off properly so I didn't cross-thread it. That said, the first half or so of the threading went pretty easily, however, the next half was some work...is this normal? Seemed like it was harder to screw in and tighten than what I would consider "normal".
I've not started the engine since the oil change, so if I need to remove it and add more o-rings I can without spilling a bunch of oil. Additionally, if I need more o-rings do you all know if there is a "kit" that I can buy that has the right ones included? I hate having to piece together o-ring kits. It's a pain in the ****!
The original part numbers for the (3) O-rings you need are 33002970, 33002971, and 33002972, in order of smallest to largest. The two smaller ones go on the bolt itself. I believe Crown Automotive sells a complete set, 33002970K. The post-90 engines use slightly different sizes.

I was referring to the Felpro part that I used#70301: They list it as fitting all years of 4.0, however it only comes with the large O-ring. It does not come with the 2 smaller ones for the shaft-bolt.
It appears that these smaller ones change between Renix/HO years

So I'm glad I made this post and doubly glad that I got the feedback from you fellas.
Tonight I went out and took the OFA off and when I looked at the o-ring it had actually been cut in half, either on the way in or on the way out. Either way, it wouldn't have been doing any "sealing", that's for sure.
I reached out to the local Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep today, but no response yet.
Anyone know another place I can order the right o-rings online? btw, I don't think I would have the room to put in a later OFA in my Jeep - it appears the charcoal canister has already claimed that location. With all the people that have done this conversion, I can only imagine that I'm not the only person who has run into this issue...or is my charcoal canister in the wrong location?
Thanks Cruiser! So regarding the oil filter upgrade at the above link; if I do this upgrade I just look/ask for a filter from say, a '97 Cherokee and it would fit vs the current style?

Once you have the nipple installed, you can use the filter from a 91 and later.
Just wanted to tell everyone thank you for the replies! Yesterday the Crown Auto kit came in and installed perfectly!
I wanted to do the filter upgrade, but since I had a Wix in hand already, I figured I'll just wait until I get over to the JY before pulling that OFA from a newer 4.0.
Btw, I also installed new engine/motor mounts and a Spectre 4300 air breather - since I've been getting oil up into my air filter. I don't really know why since the rear vac line is free and new.
Also installed a new Accel dist cap/rotor and Taylor wires and an '88 transmission computer.

Notice a difference in the shifting with the 88 TCU?
I did, and I plan to do it in the near future - my valve cover gasket has given up the ghost recently.
RE: ECU
The biggest difference I've noticed is in the 45+ mph range. It tends to kick the transmission down a gear faster than with the '87 TCU - so it's a little bit easier to maintain speed with Dallas traffic. That said, it wasn't nearly as noticeable as the upgraded ECU. I was wondering if the '89-90 TCUs were different/further improved, so I've got myself passively looking for one from those years.
ps, I received the upgraded headlight harness yesterday and plan to try to install it in the Waggie this afternoon - I'll let you know if I'm able to find a way to make it work for at least the low beams. I've not really even tried to look at the electrical diagrams so there's that...
