Default Blown Speakers or Amp?

Pretty much every speaker is distorting with the bass (98 ZJ with Infinity sound system).

Is it likely the amp, or the speakers?

Thanks!

Likely the speakers. They're usually paper cone if they're original. If the amp fails you won't have any sound normally.

You gotta figure, if those are still the factory speakers, they're over 18 years old. Even high-quality speakers deteriorate over that much timeframe.

Take the grilles off and inspect them. You'll most likely discover the surrounds are gone and/or tears in the cones.

As JPXJ stated, if your amplifier is "bad" you won't hear anything at all. If it was just one or two speakers doing it, it could be a short, break in the wiring insulation, or a blown speaker.

In your case, I think it's just time to replace your speakers.

The stock speakers are junk IMO... paper cone and even with the co-ax's in the front doors, they still are junk... you can basically put in any 6.5" or 6.75" speaker and use the stock radio, stock speaker wiring (you just get the harness adapters that have the butt connectors on one end, and a factory mating connector on the other end), and stock underseat amp. Just get 4 new speakers (the dash tweeters you can just keep, as they aren't directly replaceable because of their rather odd size and the fact that you have to cut the factory harnesses off and splice the wiring in to the new speakers), as long as they're still working fine. As long as the speakers are still working and sounding normal otherwise, the amp most likely isn't bad.

No problem! Let us know how the install goes and which speakers you end up buying!
