Default Battery terminal sparking then power loss

I just put a fresh motor in my 01 cherokee with all original wiring and electrical components. I started the jeep and it jumped to 2000rpm so I shut it off and discovered my positive terminal smoking and sparking and wires were hot. I removed the positive and reinstalled it but now there's no power at all. Any ideas that might help ??
