95 Stereo Problem
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forums and I ended up coming here after all else failed. So I recently had a wiring issue where the fuel pump was failing and jeep would keep blowing a 30amp(engine control 1) for the fuel pump, and everything else powered on it. Ended up running a 60 amp in it just to get it home, replaced the fuel pump and still had the issue blowing the fuse. Realized the fuel pump wiring underneath the rear seat got hot enough to melt the insulation around the wires due to having the 60 in it and was shorting off the body, taped it all up, and no problems since with the fuel pump or blowing fuses. You may ask how this has anything to do with my speakers and I'm not sure it is, but figured it is related. Anyways so now my speakers stopped working, radio turns on, lights up, works as it should however no sound come from the speakers, but I found a process to get them to work but when they do the fuel pump stays running. I turn the key on, no sound, quickly turn it back to the off position and then back to on and the speakers work, and the fuel pump stays running however. Once started I can not get the speakers to work at all, again the radio turns on but no sound from speakers, checked all fuses. Checked continuity from back of main radio harness for speaker wires as well and they all are good. If I pull the fuel pump relay, the wierd trick I found to get them to power on while the jeep is off doesn't work. No sound at all once the fuel pump relay is pulled, put it back in and trick works again. Thought about running all new speaker wires from the back of the radio directly to all speakers, but they all get power and play sound with that trick as well.. so I figured that was a waste of time. Any suggestions??

You are lucky it didnt burn to the ground on the way home with that bigger fuse in there. Dont do that again. Sounds like the wiring may have been hacked together at some point if the fuel pump and radio are acting as they are. If it were mine, id want to know how it was wired so i knew for sure it was wired properly. Need a wiring diagram or someone else with a 96 to compare notes with.
Yeah I know it's not a good idea to run a higher amperage fuse, however at the time it was last resort and the jeep couldn't stay where it was so I did that to make it home. I have sorta looked at the wiring diagram but I do not understand it to the level to comprehend whether the stereo system and the fuel pump are in a circuit together? Not sure if anyone is a wiring guru could help out here...

Burning to the ground by the side of the road can sometimes get in the way of getting home. You got lucky. You might not next time.
Nope. But there's no telling what got fried with that extra high current you had going. Time to start physically tracing wires to see what else is melted.

Grounds and all ignition/accessory wiring needs to be checked from beginning to end if the first suggestion doesn’t help.
when you short speakers wiring on an aftermarket deck the sound cuts out automatically, and that’s what your doing is shorting the speaker wires in the Factory harness out as well as the fuel pump so you have wires that are burnt/chafed in 2 possible locations.
the location you caused and the location that caused the fuel pump problem in the first place, no offense I’m done some dumb ish too lol.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news friend.
but that’s my best guess for tonight.
So I never found the area that was shorting, definetly in that harness somewhere but I wasn't going to rip it back apart to find it. I ended up taking a test light and checking the speaker wires coming from the speakers while the jeep was on and found the right rear speaker had power coming from it(which it shouldn't) therefore indicating that the fuel pump was definetly melted together somewhere with it. I just cut both ends of the wire and wire nutted them off isolating the circuit. I then just simply ran a new speaker wire to the rear speaker and everything works fine now.
