Back speakers playing only bass sound

As the title suggests, my 98 sports speakers have both lost their ability to produce treble sound, or so it seems. All four speakers have been replaced previously by myself with no problems over the last two years, complete with wire-nutted and taped wiring, and the stereo was replaced sometime pre-05 with a pioneer CD player.
I suspect it may be the CD player, or some of its connections, but honestly i dread trying to tear into the inevitable mess of wires it will be, and i had hoped to see a post on the problem.

I've cruised the forum for a similar issue, and not seen anything quite like this.

So, mighty jeep Gurus, how best should i proceed?

Your stereo is dying. Be a good idea to test it. Just hook the rear speakers up to the front wires to verify that the speakers aren't cooked, but unusual for bost to go out at the same time.

It sounds like your only running one frequency so before you junk your stereo check for any wires touching behind your stereo and check to see if your speakers melted any souter onto something there not suppose to and making it ground out and go from there. The souter incident happened to me btw.

I had a car do this as well. I took the stereo out and then cut a pair of headphones apart and pluged the wires into a handheld cd player and then conected the headphone wires to the corisponding car speaker wires to find out if it was the speakers or the stereo. I was lucky and found the issue was that the conection to the after market cd player had come losse and just needed to be reattached. this is a good test as all you need to do is pull the stereo out and not all the interier of the jeep to get to the speakers.

I know this is a no brained, but my Sony has the option to use the rear speakers as as bass only. If I turn it on, they only thump like a getto car. God I really hate thump-thump music.

Well, Now im hopeful that its just loose connections behind the console.
on a side note, I always find it both hilarious to see and horrifying to hear when some crappy econocar comes by, shaking and rattling to the point of the bolts falling out of the frame from the vibration the subs strapped to it. what are they thinking?
