I have questions regarding the addition of rear seats in a Jeep Comanche. I'm looking to add a rear seat, cut out back the back glass and metal, and install a roll cage. I'd to install a sunroof over the break driver; passenger side too. What are some issues and stuff to look out for. I'm looking to do something similar to this:
To answer your questions:
* Why not buy an XJ? - Because I'm looking to go topless in the Jeep. A Comanche requires less cutting and I can use the topper for the rear instead of having to fabricate one.
* Why not get a CJ/YJ/TJ? - I need 3 seat belts for the kids.
* Why not get a JKU? - We have 2. But until paid off, I don't want to go off roading in your.
I have 2 kids and one on the way. I can no longer use my modded Geo Tracker for off roading. I want to still experience the open air ride but with space!
The picture you posted is of a two-door Cherokee that has had the back half cut off and had a Comanche tailgate put on. A lot of bodywork is the first thing you're going to run into.
Unlike the photo, a Comanche bed and cab are separated. Deciding how to craft them together and make it watertight is the biggest issue I see. If you want the back seat passengers to have leg room, you'll need to cut the sheet metal back of the cab out and the front bedside out so they can put their feet down. It's certainly not impossible, but not easy either.
You could also just get a two-door XJ and rag top the roof, and make the rear hatch glass and rear passenger glass removable. This seems like less fabrication and gets you to your goal.
I'm actually designing the same thing for the back of my MJ as I already have a rear slider, rollbar and kids. I plan on mounting them with the backs against the cab. I planned on using two fold up bass boat seats as they can take rain and weather.
Do you have any pictures of your build? Did you end up cutting the bed up to allow for additional leg room?
Will not be cutting my bed up. I haven't built it yet but this can be a good thing for us to swap a few ideas and both get the design we want. Have you looked up the Volkswagen Brat? I was leaning twords it's rear seat design, except boat seats instead.

No padding or headroom= concussion. But to the original post, since you have a body and frame, and bed is separate from cab, the rear facing seats are pretty much your best option unless you go with a two-door xj.
