Default Error Message in EVIC

In the last 24 hours I have had my 2016 Trailhawk shut off completely after I slammed on my brakes while driving and I have to coast into a parking lot. I then get an error that says something along the lines of "Shift P before shifting to another gear" on my EVIC. I put my car in Park, and try to restart it but it gives me a hard time turning over, and my friend actually had to try a couple times before putting it in N to start. I have an appointment for tomorrow morning with the dealership, but has anyone had this issue or know what it could be?

Obviously it shutting down on you while driving after needing to do a "hard braking' situation... is certainly of concern. I haven't seen that much on these, but I think part of the issue(s) is that Jeep and other manufacturers in their new (2014-and up) vehicles have done away with the more traditional (mechanical) shifting in their transmissions to electronic shifting. So consumers have to learn a new method for shifting through the gears. Which is probably why you're getting the message on your display.
Is the stalling consistent? By that I mean, every time you do a "hard" stop, does the vehicle die on you?
I don't know if they have an official recall on this yet, but with a little research, I'm finding that you are NOT alone in it with this issue. So at least the bright side of this is that there's at least a decent chance that the dealership will have dealt with this issue before or can at least get info on it to resolve.
Keep us posted on the progress and resolve.

It happen to me last night and again today. That is the only 2 times it has done it since i bought the care in June 2016. Its a little scary i am not going to lie. I should be able to slam on my breaks and not have my care completely turn off. I have an appointment with the dealership tomorrow, i am still under warranty so we will see what happens i guess?

Thank you!

Being as new as yours is... without a diagnostic being run on it yet, it's difficult to say whether the issue is mechanical or electrical related.
With the weight of the vehicle traveling forward.... there's a lot of inertia that you're bringing to a full stop very quickly... so mechanical/physical... is something physically moving that shouldn't? We don't know. 2. Electrical, is something failing in a way that is causing it? Again, without the diagnostic we can't say for sure. Either way, it's something that we know is wrong, as the engine should not simply shut off due to an emergency stop.
Try to remember all the details that you can for them. It will help in a faster diagnosis and resolution.
How did it sound when the engine shut off, did it sputter at all? or did it simply sound like you had turned the ignition key off?
For instance, during the emergency stops, do you recall if the ABS system engaged or not? What approximate speed were you traveling just prior to the emergency stop?
Things like that can really help.
It's easy to deduce that it's an actual problem, because if it were a design flaw... there'd be a lot more people with the issue. I have seen some cases when I researched it though. So that will work in your favor of getting it identified. I do not know if there's an official TSB (technical service bulletin) on it or not though. Would be worth checking into/mentioning to them.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi Alyson,

Was your dealership able to diagnose/give you more info during your appointment?
