Default Thinking about buying Cherokee for son

Hey everyone,

As stated in the title, I'm thinking about buying a 1991 Cherokee for my youngest son. He'll turn 15 in January but he's already gotten the off-road bug from me (and I've only been "sick" since May myself). The jeep looks nice on Craigslist, and I'll view it in person, drive it, and have my mechanic look it over too if we get that far.

My questions are:

1. Is it kosher to link the Craigslist ad here so that you seasoned Cherokee owners can tell me what you think of the vehicle, assuming for the sake of our discussion that the ad is accurate?

2. If it is a sweet ride for a sweet price, do you promise not to buy it for yourself?

We all have one so none of us should take it... Even though I want a second... Lol
But for real go ahead and post it

Ok, I hope I'm doing this correctly. Here's the link (I think):

Looks like its in great shape but I wouldn't pay that much for it. For how that one sits I would do like 2800 tops. It's not really modified that much and even though its in great condition its still a 21 year old jeep. Don't get me wrong I love my 93 to death
If I were you I would buy a stock one for 1500 or less and go from there. For a grand you could do as much mods as he has
That's my 2 cents

No problem. I think you should get a stock one to start anyway because it will be cheaper for you, he will learn it stock and get to learn how to work on it when you go to lift it. Also makes it that much better once its lifted.
And he will like it no matter what, I'm 16 now and bought mine on my own for $900 about 15 months ago just after my 15th. It now sits at 4.5 with 32's and will soon be 6.5 with 35's all financed on my dime. Just makes it that much better

looks good. 3500 is a little steep but if its nice inside and runs strong dont be afraid to pay close to that.

If I'm interested at all, I was going to start at 2800 and try not to go over 3000 (I hope the seller isn't reading this).

Oh, I should add that my son and I AREN'T shade-tree mechanics at all, so we'd have to pay someone for lifts, mods, major engine work etc.

I don't know anything before I got my xj but with help from people on here and just doing things its not that hard to pick up. It's basically just turning wrenches because they are actually pretty easy things to work on.

That's good to know. I'm just saying we don't have a shop or the equipment to do major engine/transmission work. I don't see us swapping out the rear end or stuff like that. However, I've done more things on my '85 K5 Blazer than I ever thought I would, so who knows.

Thats what I was going to say, even though I am pretty mechanically inclined, I found that my cherokee was pretty easy...as far as exterior mods go, and not too bad mechanically. Cherokees are reliable and if maintained will run til they rust apart. Maybe if you dont pick up this Cherokee, buy a Haynes manual and have it for some reading material in the bathroom or something for you and your son, just to kind of become familiar with the vehicle you will buy. AS for the Cherokee posted, it is clean and lightly modded, yes. However, I feel that 3800 is way too steep. The blue book on it with add ons configured is still only about 2600. I would start lower then that if you go look at it.
Or if you dont pick this one up, get a more stock one, and since your son is only 15 help him build it up so when he gets his license he will have a capable or near capable vehicle.
Either way good luck, hope you get a good deal for you and your son.

Also, just to give you an idea I paid 1605 out the door with tax and all that stuff for my bone stock 99 cherokee with a plow mount on it. Only had 104k on it and was maintained by the city. I think I got pretty lucky to be honest, I just sold the plow mount for 200 bucks. There are good deals out there, just be patient and keep your eyes open. Hell, if you have a k5 now, get your son another k5, I love them, good in the summer as well as the winter. It is something you are familiar with, and so is he, not to mention you can see decent ones on craigslist for 1500 all day long. They are easy to work on, parts are cheap and readily available...not saying that Cherokee ones aren't but stick with what you know unless you want to explore some new territory.
Just trying to give you some advice.
