Ah, I see I have found my competition for cheap, sound Cherokees in the greater Atlanta area. Don't you guys go buying up all the good deals! I've been checking CL Atl religiously for about a week and half now trying to find the right deal. I'm looking for more of a stock XJ though, with a lower budget than you as well.
On that note, why does this town have so many 2wd XJs.... It either has well over 200k miles and is 4x4 or is well maintained but 2wd.

I agree with wiggles. Got mine used & all factory. I've noticed from lookn' around that if they are modified, ya' take a bigger risk of gettn' into something that is a ragg or possibly dogged. It does have a lot of nice stuff but I'd let him make it his own. Plus, birthdays & Christmas come every year. Hahaha! There is always something to add to a jeep. However, I wouldn't blame ya' if ya' got it just take it to a mechanic. I'd personally go with the factory grocery getter. Good luck to ya'.

Get the VIN and carfax it. Then spend $50-100 to have a shop you know check for all the spendy items (drivetrain, compression, head gasket). If the owner doesn't go along with this, walk away.
Stock is better. I'm a newby, but if jeeps are like motorcycles, the most dangerous thing to them are it's owners.
I wouldn't get too worked up about the price, it's worth whatever you're willing to pay. It's not like you're spending 20-30 grand on a new truck.

Good advice; thanks. I have decided to go stock and then build it out ourselves. So, I'm on the lookout for the lowest priced (my son is paying for it), lowest mileage, soccer mom's gently used 4wd grocery-getter.

I understand jeeps in the south have a little more resale due to minimal rust, but I bought my parts jeep 97 xj, with some rust, but not bad. ran and drove perfect no cel, decent interior, dirty carpet. for 375 bucks and drove it home.
if I was to put it on the road, it needed drums, rotors, 2 front tires, and a tail light.
the day after I brought it home. (it has some dents and stuff, but hell for 375, I STOLE IT.
ofcourse since then ive pillaged it a TON for my 95, but it coulda been a good started jeep for someone.

Hmmm, what about a '91 with 212K for $1,400.00?

We got one! Picked up a '98 Sport with 172k today for $1,900.00. Pictures to follow soon (son wants to wash it first). There are little things that needs fixing, but it's almost too nice to off-road: power windows, mirrors, door locks, driver seat; cruise control; up-graded stereo. However, off-road it we will!
