Also, we're wide open to suggestions about mechanical upgrades. It will be my son's DD and WW. Trail riding mostly, some mud, no rock climbing.

If your doing 3" you might as well do 31s. When I went 31s I hardly if at all noticed any mpg difference. Fuel injectors would be a good mechanical upgrade. Along with improving your cooling system (three row radiator, mechanical fan delete, tyranny cooler). Tow points should be some of your first add ons. To start id say tow hooks up front and a hitch out back. Then start your skids. Keep us updated!

Oh and this is just my opinion but actually paint and clearcoat the rims if you're going to paint them. Clean em up. Sand em, finer sand em, finer sand em, primer em, primer em again, paint paint paint, clear coat clear coat.
I think you'll be much happier with that, BUT that being said just keep an eye out on craigslist for rims. Got mine for 100 bucks (not too much more than you would spend on paint and supplies). Right now theres a set of soft 8s I REALLY want to get for 125.
