New in WV (and needing some help!! LOL)
Hello all! I am CONTEMPLATING getting a '94 Cherokee in the next couple of days from a local dealer. I believe it's a Sport (2-dr), 4.0l 6 cyl, auto, 211K miles. Dealer says it was a trade in. It looks bone stock. Pics of it look pretty good, interior is kinda 'used' though. Haven't seen it in person yet, which is why I've come here....
So what should I be wary of? I've learned to carefully check the frame and suspension (as well as the body) for rust. I've heard that checking the interior door frames and rear window can show potential frame issues (if it doesn't open/close smoothly).
The asking price is $2,195, though on the phone he said he'd take $1,750 (I need to see if that's an OTD price or what).
Uses will be....
1) Driving to/from work (about 15 miles) in snow OR when my son is using my car.
2) Weekend trips on WV backroads (no rock crawling or "mudding", just unimproved dirt roads).
3) Hopefully trips out west for the same sorta thing.
The only mods I can forsee are to enhance durability (skid plate, brush guards), mild engine stuff (CAI or perhaps a snorkle?) and rack for gear.
Any advice on what to be looking at would be EXTREMELY helpful.
Thanks!

hey welcome to cf we are here to help you is this the jeep you are looking to purchase? http://www.mountaineerpreowned.com/detail.aspx?id=2530209&PrefID=7081&.aspx
that jeep is a base model... it has lights instead of gages for the cluster it has no vent window in the rear and no power windows from the looks of the pics it looks mostly rust free... the rear bumper might be little rusty... it needs tires for sure the front ones look shot in the pictures and the wheels are missing the center caps ... you can put a 30.9.5x 15 on there no problem for a upgraded tire size with no lift.....
as for the price 1750 is not to bad... I would spend maybe 1500 assuming it runs good and has matience records... because why are the front tires worn that why is my thinking...
now as for upgrades...
-Do a tune up and change all your fluids make sure everything is working corectly...
- I would do is look for tires and rims or just tires 30.9.50x15.. you can get rims from any jeep wrangle or cherokee 06 and down...
-2nd thing I would do is the cluster swap... the lights do not tell the story for the jeep as you are driving gauges are alwasy better... plus a tach is nice it is plug and play and you need to change a few sensors the write up is on here...
-factory skid plates can be found in the junkyard for not to much money they are a great investment and protect the underneath your jeep...
also tow hooks would be helpful to have as well..

That is in fact the very Jeep I'm looking at. I agree, it looks pretty rust-free. I'm going to check it out tomorrow morning.
I'll ask about maintenance records. I'm hoping to get it for $1,750 out-the-door (or "off-the-lot" as it was).
What the heck size is "30.9.50x15"?

Take a look at it, and offer him 1250.00 and see if he takes it.
When I made the offer on my ZJ the guy wanted no less than 2200, I told him I had 2000 cash, he didn't want to go that low so I walked.
I called him the next morning and asked him if he lost any sleep over it and he started laughing, I offered him 2100 cash over the phone and he said he would accept it.
It took me 6 months to find a decent one. I looked at piles of XJs too.

yea i looked in craigslist in his area thinking i could find something cheaper there really isn't anything.... clean as that... 30x9.50x15 is the biggest set of tires you can put on there with no lift... since it needs tires that is the tire size I am suggesting...

Just looked at it. Rocker panels completely rusted through, as in "crumbles at the touch". Lots of flaking on the frame. I am passing on this one but I'll keep watching Craigslist.
