Been lurking around trying to find my bearings in this new to me Jeep world.
Always drove around looking at XJ's saying I wanted to have one. This is my first Jeep of any kind.

Pulled the trigger and got this 94 Country with 129,000 miles on it.
From what I can tell its bone stock.

Very clean interior except for the headliner I need to replace. Windshield leaked but replaced that and now no issues there.

Can't even begin to know where to start modifying this bad boy. I do love it though.

Steering wheel has a bit of play in it before wheels respond so I am going to check out the tie rod ends, ball joints, track arm. All that fun. Hopefully its just something loose and no steering box adjustment because that is way beyond my prowess. Not looking forward to ball joints if that's the issue either.

Needs new tires for sure but I want to get the NP242 checked out because the FULL TIME light doesn't come on in the dash and its VERY hard to move the 4WD selector. 4WD is all new to me so I don't even know how to verify it works properly (on the road ..no offroad yet).

First off welcome! Always great getting new members. You can shift into 4wd while moving, but not into 4 lo. I'm sure cruiser will chime in with his shifting suggestions if he sees this thread. The full time can be used whenever and the part time should only be used on loose surfaces. If you want to see if it works, putting it in 4 part time on dry pavement and trying to turn will result in a hopping as the tires try to slip. Good luck with everything! If the 4WD shifting procedure is the same as my '89 with automatic trans, shift into 4WH at any legal speed while leaving the transmission in gear. I'd recommend doing so while maintaining a steady speed. Shifting into 4WL is also done while moving, but at only 2-3 mph with the transmission first shifted into neutral, no throttle. Shift out using the same technique. If you're going to test the 4WD on pavement by putting it in 4WH or 4WL, do it only at idle speed. You can damage your drivetrain on dry pavement otherwise.

Oh, and I'd check the bulb in the dash for the "full time" light before I assumed the driveline was at fault.

I will give all that 4WD testing a go when I get home. Away on business right now.

Question for the team here, replacing those dash light bulbs. The one that would be for the 4WD full time...that seems like a nightmare..its a nightmare isnt it? haha.

Been away on business for a few weeks and with all my reading I am so anxious to find out if I have a D35 or 8.25 on the rear. Fingers crossed 8.25.

 

I did all the lights in my gauges and it wasn't too bad. I mean not the easiest thing but not terrible.

how do you get to the light panel on the left of it? the check engine, the 4wd lights, that rectangle of indicators I guess. Does the front pop off or am I going underneath?

I'm sure I can figure it out when I get home, just not in the same country as my Jeep currently.

 

I have the later model, so it's a little different but there's a plastic surround that pops off on mine and then you unscrew the gauge cluster and then flip it over and put the bulbs in. You can probably find a video or write up if you google it, lots of people change cluster lights in their Cherokees.

 

Four screws to remove the dash face. Maybe six more to unfasten the instrument cluster. Unscrew the upper speedo cable at the coupling at the firewall in between the gas and brake pedals. You can then pull the cluster out a bit and disconnect the two electrical connectors. Take note of which end of those is up. Access all the bulbs fron the back. It's simple. Thanks a lot. I won't become a member that doesn't search I promise I wouldn't make a thread asking without searching, just thought it was nice introductory banter.

After looking at that I hope its the 4WD indicator switch in the transfer case. Seems way easier. At the same time if that was bunk I doubt part time would light up. We shall see.
