I've been driving a borrowed '94 Jeep Cherokee Country since January, when my commuter vehicle developed a transmission problem that will require a transplant (new tranny). This meant learning to drive a stick shift in order to get to work!
Well, I've fallen in love with Jeeps, although I could take or leave the stick shift thing. So now I'm looking for a mid-90's Cherokee to replace my old car with. I'll probably end up with an automatic, but I could handle a stick if I have to...if the otherwise-perfect vehicle ("affordable" being a key feature) comes with a stick. Step one: saving up some money. Jeeps of that vintage cost way more than my old car is worth!
In the meantime, I'll be reading and learning.
I'm also getting my 19 year old son interested in Jeeps. We've located one for him, pending getting one minor mechanical/electrical issue fixed. Fingers crossed, he might be a Jeep Cherokee owner by the end of the week!

Welcome from England, I have never owned an automatic transmission vehicle of any kind, always manual (stick) manual more rewarding to drive, (In my opinion)
Auto seems lazy.
I'll shut up now.

Welcome from Wisconsin. I prefer the automatic transmission. Unless I'm driving a sports car, or a hotrod. You shouldn't have to much trouble finding an affordable mid '90's Cherokee in the New Mexico area. Take your time looking.

Be patient with your search, and get the cleanest one you can afford. Minor mechanical issues can be cheap to fix, but hidden rust can cost a small fortune to repair.

Thanks! I feel really welcome.
We have a neighbor who is doing some sort of transmission repair on his mid-90s Jeep then will probably be selling it, according to my significant other. I think I'll introduce myself this week!
It will probably take a couple of months to save up enough to buy one, but I think it would be all-around very practical! At least they are somewhat common here, being a mostly rural state.

Well, it took more than five months, but I found my Jeep! I now own an 87 Cherokee Laredo.
I'm very happy with it. It has less than 100k original miles, and the interior looks nearly new! (The stuff under the hood looks pretty good, too, and NO OIL LEAKS
)
