Default new guy from CA with questions

so glad to be part of this community! i was invited to off roading with a buddy of mine over the weekend and afterwords i was hooked. i started looking for a cherokee on the way home and have been scouring craigs list since to find one. the problem i have is what years are good? i think i need to find a 97 or newer but how new can i go? oh, and what i do know is i want the 6 cylinder and an automatic. also, is an all stock one better than a modded one? all i am finding right now are stock ones but i think i would prefer a modded one to save on the cost of upgrading.

lots of questions i know...and i am reading but any replies sure would be appreciated!

Watch...
As far as the age old stock vs mod purchase debate...there are pros and cons to each. Something to be aware of, not all lifts are created equal.

Welcome to the forum, I would suggest getting a stock one, so you can drive it around and get the feel of it. Then u ll know what it need and go from there. You get to decide what parts you want, what brands you prefer, etc and in the long run you save money.

If u are buying an already built jeep, 95% chances you are just buying someone else's problems. You might end up spending a lot to fix it.

Hey everyone I'm also new to the forum. I would also suggest stock. I personally prefer any year before 90. I've owned 3 jeeps and I've found success in the 88' 89' years but that's just me. Good luck building!

Jon-d I agree I've bought both and it is true another MOD could be problematic. A good stock jeep will give you more options to personalize yet met cost a little more to add the goodies. I'm currently looking for another pre 90 jeep for my infant son lol. If your looking for jeeps I always look where the area where 4x4 jeeps or weather is needed for 4x4.

Welcome along from here in England, I would buy stock and upgrade to your requirements and not someone else's.
