New guy with a $200.00 xj
New member here from Baltimore. Recently picked up a Md. titled 01 xj 4x4 with 72k for $200.00 with what i thought was just a blown headgasket. I removed the head and sent it to my local machine shop and was told the head was cracked and i also found a piston has slight damage due to overheating. This is my first jeep and for the price and condition of the body/interior i figured it would make a great project. I want to use it primarly for hauling my atv's and camping, and also some light off roading. I had to crop my pics to get them to load. I'd like to thank all you good guys/gals in advance for guideing me thru this project.

Thanks ODX. I work as a auto tech and i have my own rollback that i run in my offtime. The previous owner brought her in my work for overheating and we diagnosed that the headgasket was bad. He was'nt interested in making the repairs. He found out that i buy vehicles for scrap and offered it to me for two hundred bucks. But with the low milage and appearance i could'nt scrap her so now i got a new project on my hands that snowballed, but don't they all!!!

Nice!
I think Autozone offers a reman for 1300 + core delivered to their store.
They have several manufacturers. My buddy is a district manager for AZ and informed me that some builders they use are better than others. If you go that route PM me and Ill ask him who it was he'd recommend.
Paint the plastics with the Krylon plastic paint and it will deduct 10 years from that Jeep.

I made about $600, with the machine shop pressure testing the head, new head bolts and the headgasket kit that i bought. I threw the parts in with the deal, eventho the new owner is gonna install a re-manned long block. Yea, i'll be on the lookout for another one.

Well, the guy that bought my xj last week has it listed on baltimore craigslist for 4,500. When i showed him the piston damage he told me he was gonna install a long block and give it to his girlfriend. According to his ad he installed a 97 head, but he don't mention if he repaired the damaged #2 piston. The engine was severly overheated which caused the head to crack, blown headgasket and it melted part of the piston. I just hope he did ALL the neccessary repairs and he's not trying to screw anybody.
