Default Lookin at an XJ

Hey everyone. Hoping to get a rig soon so I can truly be a part of this forum.

Looking for input here. Got an 87 Cherokee with 227,000 miles. Has a tow package so D44 in rear and surprisingly a D44 in front. 3" pro comp lift with pretty dead 33x12.5 tires. Some vacuum leaks and one hell of a dirty oil covered 4.0L. It's been broken into. No driver side lock and you can start it without key. Column is wobbly from whoever stole it. Looks like a rear seal leak and the oil is pretty black. I think this thing has been neglected quite a bit. Front sway bar link is broken? Weld broke looks like so they disconnected the other side. Engine dies if you rev it too fast. Brakes are in serious need of new fluid.

Guy wants $1200 and I'm coming in at $800. Most I'll pay is $1000.

So what do you guys think? I have a DD so this is a recreational vehicle.

Absolutely. Pumpkin looks like a 44 and the owner says they are 44. Unless there is a diff that resembles a 44 to the T then I am 100% they are 44's

Personally, from what you're describing it sounds like maybe a $500 investment but prices vary alot across the country...

I bought my 93 in WAY better shape than that for 1k.

It's all in what you want to do with it and how much you plan to spend. Do you have access to plenty XJs in junk yards to snag parts? Can you fix it? What kind of shape is the body in?

I'm assuming you're aware that 44's didn't COME in the front of XJ's? Did the previous owner install them?

Got pictures?

I consider myself a shade tree mechanic. I will perform all repairs needed no matter how technical they may be. I know 44's don't come stock in the front. The current owner has no records from the person he bought it from but I did confirm that the front is a 44. Body looks good. Some damage behind the passenger front wheel. Nothing major. I don't want to put much money into it. I just want a rig I can take out occasionally. The 44's really have me interested in this one.

Well...Picking it up tomorrow for $900. Overall I think it's a deal since I have the lift and the d44's.

Did the lockouts fall off the Dana 44 on the ride home?

Do you have a picture of it that wasn't taken with a cell phone?

I like the wheels... they sure look a lot like a Dana 30 wheel pattern to me. I could be wrong as my computer screen picture tape measure isn't as accurate as it should be.

This is exactly how it was when I bought it. The only way I verified the D44 is the diff shape and cover. I compared it to a picture of a D44. The guy I bought it from knows even less than me about that stuff and I don't know much.

I'm happy about the 16in wheels because I can use treadwright for my new tires.

I'll get some better pics of it and post them.
