Default Hello from MN. Rusted floorless XJ

Hey everybody. Just wanted to say hello and ask a couple of questions.

Just got this 94 2 door Cherokee. Got it for 1300. The car came with a book of every single repair ever done to the car, every oil change. Previous owner ordered the car from a factory in 94. The truck has a factory towing package, limited slip and Selec Trac transmission.

With 216k on the clock the car is very very rusted, there are no floor boards left or rocker panels.
Here are a few pics.

This is the floor pans. What you see is underside of the carpet.

I did a little bit of repair on the drivers side but the pass side is totally gone.

The questions are:
1. Is it worth fixing? if yes whats the best way to fix it?
2. Deciding if i want to get replacement rocker panels or do a box steal DIY type of thing.
3. I want to get a Ready Welder for portability. Do you guys know much about them?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

94 Sport, huh? Somehow I knew that before I opened this thread. I don't know what the deal is, but just about every 94 Sport I've messed with (including mine) has bad floor rust.

Yours looks a little worse than mine, but I'm not sure without seeing some pics of the floors inside. Mine has some huge holes, but the floorpans are (mostly) solid around the edges. My biggest concern is that the welds seem to have rusted apart where the rear wheelwells meet the bed.

Most people here will tell you that unless your floorpans are REALLY bad, it's cheaper and easier to just cut out the rust and weld in new sheetmetal patch panels. That's the route I'm going right now. If your floorpans are completely unsaveable, you can get completely new floorpans and chop and weld the whole thing. That's more expensive, but comes out looking more or less OEM.

Then, once you get everything patched, coat it with POR15, and maybe some undercoating to prevent new rust.

As far as the rocker rust - I'm planning on going the box steel route. I'm going to cut them out and replace them with homemade rocksliders. Eventually, anyway.

As far as whether or not it's worth keeping - really depends on your goals and level of confidence in your work. Look around here, there are tons of rust-repair threads that will give you a good idea of what you're up against.

I feel your pain man. I knew I had holes, but didn't realize how bad until I pulled the carpet out.

Hey! Thanks for the write up. I am actually scared to even pull the carpet because I think it will be so bad I will want to just junk the car. I know most of the floor in the entire car is gone. I already started ripping the rockers. I am going to try to do the box steel solution.

I have never welded much before but I would self very mechanically inclined.

Will a 75amp mig welder with flux core wire weld a decent size box steel?

I know that it will be perfect for floor pans but not so sure about thicker steel.

Got another quick question. My Jeep has bad shocks. It bounces really bad. So i am thinking i am going to get new shocks for it. Something cheap. Was looking at these on JW and there are a couple options. One is a 2" lift. Will just the shocks give it a 2" lift? I thought i would need longer springs? If i do can i get these 2" lift shocks and have them on an otherwise stock suspension? And later get longer springs?
