Well its been a while since I logged into my account, roughly 3 years, but I recently broke and bought an old XJ again. I had two a while back, sold them both for a 4 door wrangler (not NEARLY as fun as the XJs but that's just me). Then I sold the wrangler and bought a 2016 STI. I love that car, but its no jeep, so here we are. The best part about this deal is that.... I don't have the jeep yet. I've paid for it, its waiting for me, 7.5 hours away from where I live. I have not seen it in person, I was simply following the price on Facebook and when I woke one morning to a price drop, I told him to take my money. I know what you're thinking. "Tyler (me), why would you by a jeep that is a ways away when you could find one where you live?" I'll tell ya. First off, it's not cherry red. As much as I love red cars, every xj around here is cherry red, and I want something different. Maroon goes with my college colors so were good. Second, It's a 1st gen body that isn't beat up to a pulp and the fenders are not cut. My goal is to make this jeep look mostly factory again with the exception of a small lift and slightly bigger tires. Third, its all of these and 4wd. I cannot tell you how many jeeps I have found in absolute pristine condition for a great price, only for it to be rear wheel drive. I know you can convert them but the fact is I don't want to do that work. I'd rather spend the money on cool stuff like bumpers and tires. ANYWAYS, I'm super stoked to be back into the XJ scene, the community is definitely the most fun and supportive out there! Here are some pics, I am open to name and part suggestions! As of now the power steering leaks, there is no drivers window, and the horn sticks untill you smack it.
I was thinking of buying a 1991 one with 190kish miles on it... I havent owned a car in 20 years and live in big city and am worried it will just be a money pit.
Is it unrealistic to rely on a car this old? Thanks! I love the maroon too, so ralph lauren from that time...

That's my kinda XJ! I'd call her Lisa Lisa. Great looking, too! I bought mine sight unseen, 455 miles from home, that was a fun drive back!

Yes, it will be a money pit, to a point, but that's the fun of it!
