I have an 86 Cherokee and blew the motor. It has a 2.8L in it now looking to buy a new motor to swap it out with.

A 3.4 from early 90's Camaro's are direct swaps for that motor. I'd certainly look into it.

There's a write up on it somewhere.

Read thru these links and see if you like what you see.

If I were in your shoes this is what I would do.

I agree with Lowrange, a 4.0 won't be a direct swap, if you have money, then go for it. Otherwise go with the 3.4.

1993-1995 Camaros have them, I think those year Firebirds had them too.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get another 2.8, they're a factory time bomb. Terrible motor, had one in my 1984 S10. Did the 3.4 swap, it's still weak, but a vast improvement over the 2.8. Plus it's more reliable, the 2.8 never gave me anything but trouble in that truck, the 3.4 ran like a champ

Just follow the write up that was just posted before this. Use your intake/carb and distributor. The rest should be the same, motor mounts and all. I would go through and at least throw new gaskets in the motor before I installed though. When I did the swap in my S10 I got it back together, crunk it up, and had to tear it back down to replace a head gasket.
