Question Your opinion on locking differentials please??

So i have been looking into selectable lockers for my 91 xj. My application will be for moderate rock crawling. The jeep does okay as stock but i wanna start adding on. I am pretty well certain my axles are stock, so if someone could steer me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.

Wheel your rig a bunch before you lock, if you haven't lifted yet but you are going to then lift first lock later.
You in all likely hood have a d30 front and a d35 or c8.25 in the back

dont put a selectable in the front. you will need to buy another locker if you decide to regear. a lunchbox locker front will do fine. a rear selectable would be nice, find out what axle you have. I locked my jeep before ever taking it offroad. to this day lockers and gears have been the very best upgrades I've gotten

for "moderate" rock crawling I'd say lift/tires first. then get a front lunchbox. I haven't gone to many places that my front-locker-ony friends cant follow with ease. selectables are way to expensive. leave the rear open for awhile

I agree. Lift Tires and Recovery first. Then go for a lunch box locker. If you have the Dana 35 rear I would plan to put a Locker in the front first. As you will probably brake the Dana 35 so not worth putting a whole lot of money in. Recovery before the locker because when you get stuck with a locker you are really stuck.

Great info brother, i think i will do exactly that. Is the lunchbox somewhat cheap and easy to install?

So the rear is weaker than the front, and more susceptible to fail?

you're welcome. $250 for an aussie. you can follow the instructions and install it yourself
I run a rubicon 4.5" lift. I found it on craigslist for $400. I dont think any aftermarket lifts are worth the money. it's 10x better to piece together a custom suspension.
its a good lift for what I payed for it. I'll get my money back when I sell it. I guess I'd buy it brand new. seriousoffroad has them very fairly priced

I'd look at Rusty's 4.5" lift if you are just wanting to purchase a kit. Comes with shocks, adjustable track bar, lower control arms, TC drop, & axle shims for $670. You probably won't find a more complete kit for the money. As for RE, plan to add at least $200 for shocks since the kits don't come with them.

For the record though, I am not recommending it because I have it. As others suggested, I pieced my lift together. But to do that you have to be patient, do your research, and buy your stuff when its on sale and when you can find free shipping.
