It is normal though. I can Damn near sit under mine but 4.5 should be enough. Leave it on the ground, crawl under there and use a long breaker. If you have to have someone hold on the brakes.

i had to do the same thing today to change my pinion seal.. i got my 18'' BB and a 2' piece of pipe , e break on , tires on the ground with blocks and gave it hell and it came off

I had to pull the pinion nut off of a 8.25 with only a breaker bar and I cheated. I took the bottle jack from under the rear seat and used it to apply the extra force by placing the end of the breaker bar on the jack and cranking it up. Once it breaks loose then turning by hand becomes much easier.
A little tip that works very well. Get an axtra crank handle for the jack from the junkyard and cut it down to about 12-15 inches long. Grind three flat sides on the cut end so that a cordless drill will be able to grip it. It makes life a lot easier when using the bottle jack if the drill can do all the work in 1/10 of the time it takes to sweat your *** off cranking it by hand.
