xj and cj stroker similarities?
back when i thought i would have a job at the very beginning of summer i planned on eventually doing a poor mans stroker build on a cj so basically frankenstine a 4.0 and a 4.2 togther like below
Jeep 4.2L 3.895" stroke crank
Jeep 4.2L 5.875" rods
Sealed Power 677CP standard bore pistons
9.2:1 CR
Stock 4.0 camshaft
Ported HO 1.91"/1.50" cylinder head
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
0.088" quench height
Ford 24lb/hr injectors with stock 39psi FPR for '87-'95 engines, stock injectors with stock 49psi FPR for '96 and later engines
247hp @ 4900rpm, 300lbft @ 3500rpm
then i ended up not getting my job and being poor, so i decided a xj would be better anyways, especially since i live in a pretty cold place. i just want to know if the engines are similar enough that i can just do the exact same build? i think i read that the bottom ends are a little different or mounting but aslong as the internals are the same i should be good right?

i havent found anything that says i cant so far. is their any differences at all between a 1996 cj i6 and a 1996 xj i6 engine? im buying it with 260k miles on it so i forsee either a rebuild or swap down the road. i also want to swap a manual tranny in it which i have heard is pretty simple. my ultimate i plan on driving it for a year and swapping in an ax-15, doing an engine rebuild and converting it in to a stroker.
if i end up doing an entire swap would any 1996 jeep i6 work basically?

Theres no such thing as a 1996 CJ. And 1996 Jeep motors should all be the same. that being said.. this is chrysler we're talking about. I'm sure some people have Lebaron seats and a 4cyl out of a neon under the hood of their Jeeps just because chrysler was too lazy to walk across the factory floor for the correct part.

Hoping this is a typo, '86 CJ sure, but there was no Wrangler for the '96 model year at all (YJ ended 1995 TJ started 1997). YJs had the 4.2L from '87 to '91 I THINK
Funny you say that. Not only did YJs keep the 4.2 while us Uniframe types got the 4.0, but late TJs actually do have Neon engines in them!

OP: Get the number off the driver's side of the block. Cast in pretty big sized numbers. All else is a guess at this point.
