If you put hose clamps around the blocks they can't split. Ty-raps will work if you don't have hose clamps.

Now that i think about it, the best option would probably be to buy some poly spacers, make a mold of them, return them, fill the mold with modeling clay, and pop it in the oven for a few days. They'll be WAY harder than normal rubber.
