I'm curious to know if there is any way to swap an HEI distributor like the older '82 l6 GMs onto a 96 XJ?

I've seen them used on ones that were converted to propane and carburetted but nothing on if one can be some how put on a fuel injected one. I know its probably a dumb question because of the electronics and timing. But would there be anyway to bypass that maybe?

If it's for the 99 in your pics, I think no. The ECM needs it to run the engine. I did find one for older engines, 4.2/3.8 but not 4.0.

Its for another 99 that I have with a 96 engine. I was wondering cause I'm having g weird spark issues with it. Debating on just saying the hell with it and ditching all computer systems and propane it haha

this has been tossed around alot and even tried with no success that ive heard of yet, the problem with the 4.0L is the computer has the control on the distributor so if you go screwing with it things go bat**** crazy.

Yeah I wouldn't doubt that! Ill probably do a propane conversion if I can't get my second jeep running.

I run hei on mine, but, I have ditched the injection in favor of a carb. You can use the distributor from the gm inline, and just swap the distributor gear over. Did you give msd any thought?

Did you have to swap the manifold as well for the Carb to fit? And I'm putting a crank sensor in it this week and it that doesn't work then I'm trying the coil next.

Yup, you can use a 258 manifold, if you go 2bbl, I went with an Offy 4bbl intake. Either way will require slight modification to fit correctly. I also had to relocate my rear header tube for the intake to fit (though I believe Clifford makes a direct fit one). If you have an automatic, you have to figure out a way to hook up a tps. A power steering bracket also needs to be fabbed up. The stock throttle cable, and downshift cable work, but a bracket for them must be made as well.

Yeah I've read up on the manifolds. I'd definitely go with the 4bbl. You think a 2bbl from an older carbed 6 cylinder jeep could be converted to a 4bbl and also bolt on?

And yeah its an automatic. That answers my question about why it said not for automatic. Where the brackets and tps some what easy? And do you know of any complete write ups for it?

I would just get the proper manifold, you can buy adaptors to bolt a 4bbl to a 2bbl intake, or vic versa, but it's kinda defeating the purpose of having the secondaries (think of a restrictor plate on a stockcar). When I was researching this swap, I couldn't find anything about it, but I do have a build thread on another site that kinda shows what needs to be done.

Kind of pointles to "fix" a bunch of stuff that aint broken. Changing the whole fuel system and distributor is going to cost way more than just fixing the problem, it will cost more than even having a shop diagnose and repair it.

Eh, depends on how you go about it, granted my setup tips into the $500 range, I could have done this for less than half that, had I used a 258 intake, 2bbl carb, and a junkyard distributor. Would I recomend this swap for anyone, nope, modern efi is way easier, and far less time consuming. Unless you are *very good* with carbs, and tuning, this is the last thing you would want to do. That being said, I don't regret switching over, except for when it's 15 below zero, and I have to babysit the thing for a few minutes as it warms up .
