Default Wheel offset and backspacing

I'm lifting my xj 3 in with 31's and wondering what wheels to get I want them to go 1 or 2 inches out of the flares any suggestions on wheels? Any pictures? I have been looking at these but I don't know how they will look. Thanks guys!

well if you want them to stick out that far, you will need at least 3.75 backspacing on an 8 inch rim.
you won't find many if any 8 inch rim with less than that.

then if they still don't stick out far enough for your liking, you can add wheel spacers.

Yup you want a 15x8" wheel with 3.75" of BS they are good for your 31's up to 33-35x12:50's.

Are you sure you want your tire sticking out past the flares. I haven't lived in NY for a long , long time but I still have bad memories about those safety inspections.

If he doesn't get the 3.75" of BS his tires will hit the stock lower CA's and the fenders. Here is a 33x12:50x15 with 3.75 on a 8" wheel and they cleared with the stock arms when it was at 3" of lift. The fenders had been cut before also. These photos are at 4 1/2" of lift and adj u/l ca's.

Don't the tires sticking out past the sides make it hard to get through narrow places on the trail ???

it's really the same as having a wider vehicle .. Plus wider = better COG and balance

trying to explain things to you is about as hard as telling a dog to meow.. It's a jeep, he's building his XJ.

In NY I would keep them close to the flares, 31's on 8 inch rims, 3.75 and up will fill out nicely but not stick out enough to attract every cop in your town. I ran factory rims with 31s for a while, little bit of rub when wheeling hard but nothing day to day. The pic above from El Guapo is what I'm talking about, looks good but no tickets. Fred's jeep is wicked cool but every cop in NY will stop you on sight.lol.
