Default Transfer case question

I have a 1987 cherokee pioneer and according to the Vin breakdown it has the NP207 transfer case in it and I was wondering how durable that transfer case is, I am planning to lift the jeep 4.5" and run 33s and just wanting to Know if that case will hold up. going to be used for 90% trail use. and just getting to the trails on-road thinking about dolly towing or flat towing to the trail also.

I've been using Novak Conversions as a reference for years:

The NP207 is one of the weaker jeep transfer cases and they are becoming harder to find parts for due to there age. You could swap it out for the NP231 depending on what tranny you have.

currently behind a manual 5 speed (think its the Peugeot due to year but have not checked. I may run it till it dies then swap it out for a 231.

Sounds like a plan. I have the NP231 and don't have any issues but I'm only hard on it once a month maybe but it has over 200000 miles on it and still keeps going.

Yeah, that would be definitely be a Peugeot if original. I had an 87 and it puked up its guts at 128,000. You'll want to do a Tranny and T-Case swap.

I also have a Engine and trans out of a 96 cherokee that I bought for parts but it is an automatic was hoping to have the transfer case also out of it but it was damaged in the accident (housing is broken in half), was planning to swap the engine only but may swap the trans also not sure manual is in good shape at the moment. so was thinking about keeping the manual for now and swapping in the auto if it dies.

231 T-case is way better than 207, even better than 242.
If it fitted into your rig, BA10 tranny (Peugeot tranny) is weaker than AX5 and this is weaker than AX15.
Fit the 231 and go, when ready, fit an AX15 and problem solved.

The 87 Cherokee that I had has been replaced with another 87 with an Automatic Trans (original one had no floors on the passenger side of the truck, was originally from Rhode Island) but the new one also has the NP207 so is there anything I need to look out for to swap to a NP231 T-case are there any input shaft or any other differences that I need to look out for or certain years that will not work on it? going to use the 207 for now but will be on the look out for a 231 to swap in so just doing some homework before hand.
