Default Swapping Transmissions

Hello, I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee and it is manual 5 gears. It is also a 2 wheel drive. I have had this jeep since 1995 and it has been really good to me. It just turned over 400 thousand miles with original engine and transmission. I do all my work on my jeep. I just recently replaced the valve stem seals. I have dropped the transmission more times than I wanted to because of the clutch slave cylinder so I am not new to working on my jeep. Last year in the fall, I had to take a long trip, I knew I had to replace my sync rings in my transmission because I could not get it into third gear anymore. While on my trip, my transmission started to go out on me, until it finally broke. It sounded nasty. I could not get it into any gears at all. Well, it was towed home and is sitting there until I get back home. I am a full time artist and I need to take more long trips to capture the world. I was thinking of getting a new 4 runner but then I think of my jeep and I would rather have my jeep. I need to get a new transmission. Here are my questions, since I am going to replace the transmission, AX15 manual. Can I swap it out with an automatic transmission instead? I do like my manual but I am just tried of replacing that clutch slave and that dam thing keeps going out. If I did that, would I just remove the clutch pedal and remove all clutch related items? And... while im doing this, can I make my jeep into a 4x4 and put a transfer case or just get a transmission with a transfer case. I understand that I would need to get a front axel. I could go to the junk yard and get my parts from there. I know this sounds like a lot of work but I am willing to do the work if it is possible to overhaul my 1992 jeep. Ive heard, just get another jeep, but I want this one. Please let me know what ya think or any advice.

All of this can be done. But it will not be simple. You will need many parts and you would probably be better off buying a complete vehicle as a parts donor.

Thank you trailertrash for your suggestion. I think I am going to need the entire bottom of a jeep.

In my "keepers" I change the clutch and brake& brake fluid from DOT 3 (glycol ) to DOT 5 (silicone) and I'm good for a couple-few decades.

The plusses of DOT 5.
It's more slippery/lubricious than DOT 3
It does not absorb moisture out the air like DOT 3
It's boiling point is stratospheric.

The minuses of DOT 5.
It's wicked expensive compared to DOT 3
It cavitates in ABS pumps so not for use in vehicles with that.

To convert from 3 to 5 the systems must be thoroughly drained and then flushed with 100% strength isopropyl before pouring in the 5.
If DOT 3 and DOT 5 mix, they jell.
