I've never had a manual XJ, but the procedure should be the same as other vehicles.
The drive shaft and transmission need to be removed, likely the transfer case here also. Then, the clutch assembly is removed. The new one is replaced with the clutch plates aligned with the tool usually provided with new ones. After the assembly is buttoned up, the transmission, transfer case, and shaft are replaced. The linkage is replaced in position and adjusted if needed. This is a very good time to inspect the u-joints and service if needed.
So, if you're equipped to do this degree of undercar work, there you go. It has been done by many up on ramps, but it's a bear and you'll need jacks of some kind to move the transmission out and in and away. If it's above your pay grade, expect to pay around $700 average for it to be done by a shop, parts included.
