Kinda like the whole EV bull hocky, you'll break even after paying your 55k after 5 years and then have to buy a newer one because the batteries have degraded, go clean energy!
I had a econut terrorist neighbor (who moved here from cali recently) and who drives an EV ****ting on me the other day when I was out doing a minor repair on my daily driver (1998 Mazda B4000), because it's a gas guzzling polluting vehicle, I should get myself an EV like them so they can breath cleaner air... They then couldn't explain to me how their new EV that they replace every two years with something BRAND NEW that uses electricity from our natural gas power plants (at least the one closest to us burns natural gas) is any cleaner on the environment. I called them elitist trash for putting their pollution in somebody else's yard, and then thinking themselves above others. I love my neighbors.

Those idjits don't even realize that half of their "green" vehicle is plastic, guess where that comes from? Oh, yeah...PETROLEUM...not to mention the lithium that goes into the batteries, and all the other toxic stuff that goes into it.
Damn people are a ****ing joke. Hypocrites.
I'll keep driving my 20+ year old vehicle, maintain it myself for way cheaper, and enjoy using it for what it was intended. Suck on that, greenies...

I have seen the topic "Is it less polluting to keep my old car till I die rather than buy a new EV" in some news and vehicle articles and forums
(the answer is it depends on a bunch of variables)
The OP I believe is asking whether it will be cheaper ?
In my opinion, given all the factors, it would be cheaper to buy an additional reliable used smaller car that retains good resale value

What do you carry around in the work truck? do you need high clearance/4wd? if not, sell it, then getting a minivan/small wagon/hatchback would save you a ton of fuel, and you wouldn't have to mess with the temporary engine swap. There is only so much fuel savings you will get with a more efficient engine in a brick that the XJ is. Something like a 2014 or newer Jeep patriot can be picked up with the 2.4 and the 6speed auto (DO NOT GET ONE WITH THE CVT), for $10k or less, and give you a ton of room, and close to 30mpg:

My wife and I have 5 cars, my 98 Ranger, her 01 Blazer, the family 04 Tahoe, my 89 XJ, none of which get better than 17mpg on their best days, and a 2017 Fiat 124 spider, that has been my "fuel efficient" vehicle. But that is my dad's that we're babysitting while they are on a church mission, but my parents come home in a month, so I picked up a 2008 Saab 9-3 Wagon for $7k, and will be driving it as my "daily" at 30+mpg, fuel saver. It holds a **** ton of stuff, and can hold people, and easily pay for itself.

The other issue I have is that I carry large blades used in the manufacturing industry, my truck is perfect for such jobs.

haha, 6ft 7 does rule out a small car, an ex-boss of mine used to rag me about my large vehicles, but when I saw him crammed into his tiny ****box car, I literally fell down laughing, and he was only 6ft 5 and 19stone
I still cant see any sensible way out of your dilemma, a whole Toyota Diesel driveline swap may work, but with Diesel recently becoming stupidly expensive, I wouldnt

If appearance doesn’t matter and your ego can handle it, a minivan ticks a lot of boxes: cheap, a little better on gas then xj, comfortable, there are a million dodge caravans around, can be well equipped, so much more room then a jeep even with only half the seats down…
