just got a 106,000 mile 98 classic with a 231 want to swap in a 242. it will be a winter driver in the snow only not going playing in the dirt. I know the 231 is stronger but I want the full-time 4wd. i've read most of the threads here and I am looking for answers to these questions please. i will be buying one online if I cant find one local. good chance I wont be able to pre-inspect.

need a np242, np242j?, p/n?
what year xj's or wj's? are direct swap without having to modify?
where can I get a good overhaul kit for same?
anyone close to Dayton ohio got one?
is there a kit or harness adapter/extension to make the dash light work?

All you need is the transfer case, shift bezel, and the wiring pigtail. A 23 spline np242 out of a 91-01 XJ will work.
