my carrier housing is stuck in my dana 30 front diff. 2004 gc. how should i pop it out. tried a pry bar only got it to budge tiny bit. thanks

 

They do make a spreader for the case. I've also heard of feeding a clean rag into the gears while turning the shafts. I've never had to try it though.

thanks guys i might have to try the rag between pinion and carrier. could there be anything else holding it in like a snap ring or a c ring? the axles are all way out and bearing caps are off. i guess normally the carrier comes right out, just my luck!!

 

I did the rag trick with mine. Worked like a champ. Getting it out is the easy part. Getting back in is the fun part. I made a case spreader for mine when I regeared. I made mine just like this youtube video:
That guy goes way overboard trying to be precise. I cranked mine out in maybe 20 minutes with band saw, grinder, and welding machine. The carrier should be tight in there. If it falls right out, then the carrier bearings are likely worn out.

 

Or you could just stick the carrier in the freezer for a few hours and it will tighten up enough to clear the 20 thousandths you need.

 

awesome! the rag trick worked. although i had to keep stuffing t shirt material into the pinion gear and turning the driveshaft with a big screwdriver for a while. but slowing it creeped out. im gonna try sticking the carrier in the fridge and heat up the case with a propane torch or a hot lamp when i put it back in.

 

there was only one thick shim on each bearing side, i thought there would be a bunch of thinner ones.

 

carrier in the freezer is ok....

DO NOT heat the case, or you could damage it permanently from warping due to uneven heating

 

Assuming the torch is a hand held propane torch (the one with a blue bottle), I doubt OP could get enough heat into the housing to warp it. Before doing any heating or freezing though, try smacking it back in with a mallet. I built a case spreader for mine when I was setting up gears. Made it much easier getting it in and out repeatedly, but can typically get them in with a mallet with a little effort.

What are you pulling the carrier for anyways?

 

i noticed oil dripping on the inside of my front wheels. i eventually noticed it was coming from my axle ends. so i found out about axle seals, that they wear out. its my second differential. first front. i have to say finding the right seals has not been easy at my local auto parts store or the dealership. im gonna go back to the dealership tomorrow and try again. all in all its pretty cool.

I second freegdr. Those are the seals I used on mine. Report back when you get them installed and the carrier in. Curious to know how you get the carrier reinstalled.
