Default Stopping problems on a disc brake D44

Well I bought an 89 Cherokee with some braking problems thinking that it only needed to be bled. The pedal goes halfway to the floor without resistance before the brakes stop the vehicle. When it stops, it stops hard, almost to the point of locking the brakes up. After crawling underneath it to start bleeding the brakes I found that the D44 had been converted over to disc brakes. I'm not sure what type of conversion they are or if the proportioning valve has been changed. Where do I need to start?? Also I have not tried bleeding the brakes yet I basically stopped after I found the rear had been converted

Bleed the brakes. Note fluid condition. Have someone pump the brake pedal while you watch inside the master cylinder. If there are bubbles coming up, the master is probably bad.

I will do that as soon as I get home or when this storm passes!
What do you mean by fluid condition?

Does the fluid look good or old and grungy?
