A reasonable assumption but guys have tried it and found that it doesn't happen in practice. Even the DIY mod that uses the stock air box and draws air from the uncovered part of the cowl in front of the driver, the hose gets a bit of water in it but the filter remains dry.

Amen been there done that and oh how correct you are. If your in that deep you've got a lot more things wet than just the intake, lots of electrical you have to dry out along with interior.
This is one of the things I really try to avoid at all costs anymore a real PITA!

What do you have against the stock air box? The space they take up? Not many options for DIY filtration that aren't the same size and or sit in the cowl. The guys putting the filters IN the cowl are not thinking far ahead or live in the desert. First off, while the passenger side is shielded from direct rain from above that's only useful if you never drive the Jeep. Mud and rain still gets in there, and since it's started snowing I've seen people posting about snow blowing out of their vents... Second you have to remove the cowling to change the air filter

There are a variety of other air cleaners available at the JY. I went poking around and settled on one I liked from a 2001 GMC Savana that had a 5.7L V8 in it. It's currently on my Jeep and I've yet to actually complete the snorkle part lol

I ran a spectre cowl intake on my last 98 cherokee with an ax15, sounded cool, acceleration seemed a little more stout, other than that, not much else gained. Cheap enough and looks cool. No water ever in the intake tube. Through winter and our rain season I never had issues. The inline filter did what it was supposed to, every time I'd change the oil, I'd pop the tube open and on the cowl side there would always be tiny tiny dirt particles resting there, but nothing in the throttle body side. Ever. No dirt or moisture. Throttle body was always clean to.

I felt a slight increase in performance, nothing earth shattering but noticeable. No issue with water as that side of the cowl has a false vent, no water should get near it due to rain.
