So I've been tossing around the idea of putting one on the XJ. The only thing is, for those who live in Reno NV or anywhere in Nv knows there's not many water crossings here. I'm curious because I've heard it can give a lil more power but I've only come across one crossing where I got nervous about as well. And does it really give a lil bit of power and is it worth it?

If you do a cowl snorkel you won't see it and you will get rid of your air box opens up the engine bay a lot I say do it

I think a cowl snorkel would be a good compromise for you. No_rdplz did a snorkel and said he noticed a definite improvement in throttle response. Not necessarily more power.

Shoo I'm going to use the tubing from Advance/Autozone for 20 bucks. Some RTV, some plastic to fill the airbox hole and a 3" hole saw and I'll be good. Maybe 30 bucks? Similar to what Dukie did.

Snorkel it real good. I've only had to use it a few times, but it's better safe than sorry.

I live in the reno/Tahoe area and I just hydrolocked at Fordyce. I'll be adding a spectre cowl intake to my list for sure. woulda saved my ****. but if the water is deep enough to give you trouble on a trail like Fordyce, and you're on 32" tires you'll be getting swept away. just try not to swim through lakes and you'll be ok

another good reason for the spectre is that it draws air from a closed space. so it's not sucking in pure dirt clouds on the trail. I go through a filter every month or so. the spectre would pay for itself soon enough

real periscope snorkels just look dumb to me

Don't worry a monkey could install these things. Standard tools is all that is needed and a 3 inch hole saw. Hell I drilled 6 points with a 1/2' drill bit in the 3 inch circle and used a pair of tin snips that are made for cutting round cuts. Had the snips so I saved 20 bucks by not having to get the hole saw. I used Black RTV sealer when I mounted the intake base to the fire wall for a good seal. Just buy it from either Jegs or Summit. Both have em' for $149 and free shipping while others sell em' for $200.00 and they look a ton better than cobbled together PVC chunks. No disrespect guys but I'd rather have something look good and function rather than have it function and look like the toilet plumbing under a double wide trailer.
