this problem all started when I lifted my 1998 XJ Sport. I'm afraid my transmission might be going to junk. My Jeep is a 98 Sport 4.0 with auto transmission lifted 3" with 31" m/ts. When I pull out of my driveway and go to pick up speed it feels like someone is trying to pull me backwards, then when I let off the pedal then put it down again it feels like it pops into first and takes off. If I start of by putting it in 1st, it takes off just fine. Any clues of what it could be?

Sounds like it's not starting off in first. I have seen several threads where the transmission solenoids can cause it to start off in high gear and the clutches just slip but if you manually shift in to 1-2 it will work right.

Have you done the free fix to the throttle cable?

def. sounds like the tranny solenoids , thats how my 98 acted w/ 130 k miles. changed the 3 sole. ,filter & fluid works like new. btw a tranny shop wanted $2200 for a rebuild job, fixed it myself for $300 in about 2 hrs.
