I'm considering the same thing. Buying a used doner axle and building it while I drive around on the original and swapping out once I have it complete and ready to go. Minimal down time and the ability to wait and look for deals on parts is a great luxury.

Exactly what I did.
Found an 8.25 with 4:11's and a Eaton Detroit LSD for $200.
Spent the winter cleaning up the rust cutting off the stock spring perches and shock mounts. Got anti wrap perches and low profile shock mounts and welded them on with my 4° needed for my 4.5" lift and added the disc brakes off a 2003 Liberty Renegade. Got a total of $450 in it and I'm happy. Did the swap in an afternoon and got $200 for my stock axle. WIN!
