Default SB Chevy motor/tranny.

I found the motor mounts to put a SB into my XJ. What tranny would you all use. TH350 or TH400?? I'll be using my 231 tcase unless i can get a chevy one at a good price. Then i could run chevy 1/2 ton axles. I looked around and didnt find much. Im sure this has been brought up alot. Just couldnt find the info. Also what about wiring?? How hard would it be to run. Im looking for the older 350 with carb.
TIA
J.

wiring an old carb'd small block is cake. just starting and charging system.

why anyone would want to install a carbureted motor into an off road vehicle this day in age is beyond me though.

if you put a stock q-jet carb on you will have less problems on inclines then aftermarket carbs. its a lot cleaner looking to run a older motor, you don't have a bunch of sensors and wire everywhere. if something happens its is easier to figure out whats wrong. the 700r4 is nice due to over drive but unless you get it built its week. (my mom blew 3 of them in her fullsize van) I would say the 400 for strength but the 350 is cheap they all will work for ya

Why would you want the Th400 they sap a lot of power ? Also as mentioned above a carb motor in a jeep is just dumb and a Qjet will have issue just as any other controlled fuel leak would . A TBI 305 or 350 would power an xj just fine . I am going to gather a 5.3 and a 700 to repower my xj it just makes sense.

I have been gathering parts for this for awhile now and still have a long way to go. 383 stoker, 231 case out of a 4.3 S10,has driver side drop, and maybe the 700r4 out of the s 10 also don't know yet. Trash all that factory crap and run aftermarket EFI,MSD or something similar. The first gen smallblock makes for such a clean swap and I don't really see the ls engines making the torque of the 383. Just my opinion.

That 383 will be a monster in a light weight XJ. Good choice.

bad @$$ build. So you went with a th350 tranny? I may just buy a wrecked chevy 4x4 truck so i have all the parts plus extras. That would probably be the best way to ensure ive got what i need... plus it'll have the axles.

Find an older wrecked suburban. It should have everything you need and it wont cost that much. This is the route i am currently taking. I have a carb 350 and I am looking for all the same things.

If you're going with a 383 (a true 383, like Aljay said with 6" rods and not 5.7's) then you better just toss that 231 and start looking for a D300. And invest in some front to back frame stiffeners.

And speaking of 383's..

Great minds think alike.
