Default RR SYE Issues

My neighbor installed a RR SYE on his Xj and it's not working properly. Since his install he can shift from 2wd-4hi-neutral but it will not shift into 4 low.

When he has the case taken apart everything looks good it shifts proper through all gears but when he installs it in the XJ it won't shift into low. His linkage is not bent it seized either.

Does anyone have any thoughts ?

Have you tried adjusting the linkage?

I'd disconnect the linkage and try to shift with a wrench. If that works, then it's a linkage issue.

I have read that the shift fork needs to be grinded down on SOME transfer cases. I think the older ones. There are threads on this issue that might help.

I just did the same kit in mine. If I remember correctly, you have to make sure the shifter is in 4LO (may be another position) before you take it apart. Sounds like he's almost there, maybe something minor. Also, there's a possibility that he put something on wrong (I'm thinking the new output shaft). As I recall, the instructions weren't the most detailed I'd ever seen. I had to get online and view a few threads and videos to make sure I did everything right.

He has taken it apart 2x already one of our mutual friends who installed a few checked it out and said its all good. When it's not in the jeep it shifts great through all the gears but once installed it has 2-4-n And you can move the lever all they way back and it won't leave N. His linkage does bit appear bent or to binding

The sye tail housing is binding on the shift fork rod ,tell him to loosen the bolts on the tail housing there is enough play in the bolt holes to move the housing away from the shift fork rod it does not take much for this to happen.

If it shifting on the bench but not in the vechicle its a linkage issue. Is shift lever in this position ?
