yup cant flip the axle an you cant reclock you 231. you need a new tcase
an it is an aw4. a d300 tcase might be your best bet but it has a stock gear ratio of 2:1 for the low where there the 231 has a ratio of 2.72:1

Ok, in the unlikely event that the axle would be spinning the correct direction when flipped, you would then be driving the gears on the reverse side as well (AKA weak side). You dont want to drive the ring gear on the back side, this is why they redesigned front axles to have the ring gear cut with the spiral the correct direction to be strong in forward motion instead of just being strong in reverse like it would be if left unchanged.
Its just not the correct idea to flip the axle, simple as that

you are correct it does not determine rotation always
BUT
you do not have the proper oiling and you would essentially melt them...
so.... you still CANT do it....

It would be massively easier with a driver side drop axle, that's unless you want to rebuild the whole floor. The tunnels are designed to fit the drivers side drop transfer cases. You will have to cut the passenger side all up in order to fit a passenger side drop transfer case, which in turn leads to changing the seat mount points (assuming you're keeping a passenger side seat) and the exhaust will have to be routed under the drivers side. You will be opening a big can of worms there.

You CAN flip a yota axle, I know several people who have. You have to swap the inner Cs left to right, cut off the front of the housing (yotas have a drop out third so no diff cover) and flip it and weld it back on. It's a ton of work and not something I'd recommend doing if you don't have a jig but it is doable.
