I have known that the ford explorer hatch shocks fit the xj but with some modification. What modification is needed if any? Also I've heard ford windstar hatch shocks are better. Has anyone done this?

Why don't you just buy new shocks for the XJ?
Amazon.com: StrongArm 4291 Jeep Cherokee Liftgate Lift Support 1997-01, (Pack of 1): Automotive Amazon.com: StrongArm 4291 Jeep Cherokee Liftgate Lift Support 1997-01, (Pack of 1): Automotive

They're not expensive and require no mods to fit.

Explorer shocks are WAY stronger. One will be sufficient, but then you have odd torque when closing and, apparently, this can warp tailgate.

Just go oem..

I guess I got lucky, the hatch opens itself as soon as I hit the button

I thought the ones I found for the explorer were cheap but came to realize that Amazon has them cheaper and new. Good thing I didn't buy them.
