Default Repair the old and broken or buy newer model?

I have a 1990 XJ with a blown Line 6... also when the head gasket blew.. the upper hose blew.. which melted just about all the vacuum lines

my question is should i repair my current XJ or buy a newer model.. maybe 99...

what costs am i looking at in average...

and would it be possible to update it a bit.. as vacuum tech is an area im not so good with...

thanks,

Someone want to respond and not just look at it.?

I feel like the new kid in class who just asked for extra homework... I'm overseas right now i need someone to chat gears with or im going to go nuts..

is it worth the time and money to build up a 1990 XJ?

What are the pro's and cons?

i hear alot that the 90 is easier because it has fewer problems..

Im new to cherokee's.. My first jeep was a TJ Sport..

maybe if i start giving away free bottles of Gear Lube...

How much to repair whats wrong? I would weigh the cost of both, and take into consideration any mods or upgrades on your current xj, cuz you'll have to do em all over again, (not bad if you love to do it) and if you buy another xj I would get one as close to the same year as possible to swap over any parts I could

What do you do with it? If it is your dd I would say go with a 97+. There updated dash is worth the extra few hondo. If you are just wheeling it with some driving I would go with a 91-95 I like the wiring better. Just simple and proven. Some will say fix what you have but I am no fan of 84-90. I think they are a pain in the a$$.

I say fix what you have. Even if you upgrade all the bad parts on the renix engine you will still be way under the cost of a new(er) cherokee. Figure on 1500 for a COMPLETE engine rebuild along with head and new vacuum lines and all the misc bs that you may need. Then you have a new engine in a vehicle that you know the history on the rest of the drivetrain. I dont have a problem with the renix wiring so thats what I would do....just fix it.

I personally prefer the Renix era motors... Less sensors to go wrong and the wiring is simplier then the OBD1 or the OBD2.

Personally I would buy a gasket set, and a newer head.. have your block, and the replacement head checked for warpage, and assemble. YOu can find a head for 150 or so... gaskets on the high side would be 100... machine shop maybe 100. One afternoon and you will be up and running again.

thanks everyone for replying.. I was starting to feel like a road side attraction...lol

as to the purpose.. Im a jeeper.. DD makes no difference to me.. though i was thinking of just building it up for beach buggy and giving it to my father.. I finally got the bug into his head.. and then maybe buying a newer model down the line..

however upon my return to the states i am planning on rebuilding the engine.. if the block is not warped or cracked.. i just bought her a few months before i left for Iraq paid 1k... was sitting in a back yard in Western TN... was working for chrysler at the time and had access to a rack.. (sighs i miss having a rack..lol)...

I'll look into those links you provided.. and thank you for humoring a bored mechanic.. thanks again,
