Regear or swap
Hey all, I'm sure this has been covered before I just wanted some fresh opinions. So here's the deal I have a 98 XJ on 33's it has the 8.25 rear and the build sheet says it's 3.55 gears, I did the drive shaft spin to double check and it was ~1.75 rotations on the drive shaft to one wheel spin (on open diff it's 1.75x2 ~3.5 correct?) So I'm really wanting to regear, pretty sure 4.56 is what to go for but maybe 4.10. It will be a DD for the time being and I'll do some wheeling as I can but I want it to handle the highway when I need to. So where I'm stuck at now is the quote I received to regear to 4.56 was 18-1900 and this is not putting in lockers or anything. I want this done right and done once so maybe this is a fair price. I'm pretty competent with a wrench but I'm not comfortable regearing myself. I figure if I'm going to pay that kind of money why no just buy a complete bolt in axle like this http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-476...-assembly.html. Also I know there are other bolt in options if I find some junkyard gold or I could find a good shop around here and have them do the welding needed for something else. I'm willing to wait on doing this so I can do what the best bang for the buck even if that means no highway for a year. So what would you do if it was your Jeep (with in reason I'm just a blue collar grunt) On a side note I have a 2000 that is needing a lot of love and has a d35 so if I do swap out on the 98 I'll just keep the 8.25 for the 2000. Thanks all

1800-1900 is highway robbery for a regear. Find another shop. Gears are 200$, hourly rate should be 4 hours, so 400$ plus 400 = 800. How they got 1800$ i have no idea.

I don't know honestly I wasn't sure what it would cost but even my Dad (ASE Master 25yr+) thought it was high, and no he can't do the regear he's 5+ hours away and doesn't do gears lol. But I was told that was gears full install kit, labor, and fluid for both axles.
