Regear from 3.55, new carrier?
Hi guys,
Got a 2000 4.0 AW4 XJ with a Dana 35 rear and Dana 30 Low pinion up front.
Want to regear my stock 3.55 axle ratios to 4.10. I'm looking at purchasing a full kit. I read somewhere that I would need to replace the front dana 30 carrier? Do I need to replace the rear too? Can anyone elaborate on this, I don't quite understand.
I live outside of the US, I have a parts "mule" coming over in June and I'd like to get everything I need so I can do the job without any missing pieces.
Thanks

You will need a different carrier for your front Dana 30. For the rear I wouldn't waste the money regearing a Dana 35 you would be better off finding a Chrysler 8.25 out of another XJ and regearing it to 4.1 the putting it in your Jeep.

Are you sure you have a D35 in the rear? Yours should have come with the 8.25 from the factory which would not require a different carrier.

Definitely don’t have an C8.25 rear...I’ve taken them c-clips and shafts out myself.
The problem is, down here in South Africa the C8.25 out of an XJ is pretty rare near impossible to come by. XJs are not as common as in the states, so I’ve resigned myself to living the the Dana 35 - I’m on 3inches and 31s and I don’t intend on going any bigger, so the 35 should be ok.
There are loads of mountains here, just moved to 31s and the difference in power is very noticeable so I have to do something. I know the 2.5 petrol XJ comes stick with 4.10, so looking out for them, but also super rare.
in the end of the day my options are pretty limited.
so to confirm, I need to replace both carriers or just the Dana 30 to regear to 4.10?

for the d35 the carrier split ... where the gears require a different carrier... is 3.55
for the d30 it's 3.73.

Hope this helps
