Default Ok im about to regear

heres what im thinking. im gonna go aussies front and rear, 4:56's, because its not a dd, but my question is, do i need a new carrier, because the stock gears are 355's and it says i need a new carrier for the bigger gears, is this acurate?
oh and my tire size now is 31's but im going 32's after the regear.
and i cannot, i repeat, cannot afford air or elec lockers.
this is one thing i have no idea what im doing i just read alot on a couple boards, so advise will not be taken as slams

unless you are going to go 33's or 35;s the 456 is a little high you could get away with 410 unless you are running a 4 banger

yup, new carrier for 3.73 and up

yeah, i'd go 4.56 for sure. nothing like the lower gear for climbing.

best you can go is 4.88 in the d30. it'd be a little high for highway driving, but killer on the trail.

Yes you do need the new carrier going from 3.55 to 4.56. I currently run 4.56 gears and Aussie Lockers front and rear on my XJ. I have 32" tires and these gears are a tad low. I'm planning on getting 33s as my tires are about hashed. 4.56 gears are perfect for 33s. If you stay at 31 or 32s, and have a 4.0 6 cylinder, I would go with 4.10s. But, if you ever plan on going bigger, plan ahead and get the 4.56s like I did.

If you plan to run it at all for long distances on the hwy, I would recommend 4.10s, if that is no big deal then stay with your pick of 4.56s

I get 20 MPG on the highway with my 4.56s and 32s. With the Lockers. I used to get 22 with the 4.56s and 32s before the lockers.

opps sorry guys, yes i have an 87 with a auto and the 4.0. i have a waggy so a d44 in the rear and well im not sure whats up front, whatever is stock, i think a 30.
the reason im going with the 4:56's is cause i want a 19 ft jetboat and its not a dd, so the only freeway it will see is on the way to the river. i also may go with a 6.5 lift and 33's later on and i want to be prepared.

My 91 has the 4.0 HO motor and AW-4 auto tranny. If you're planning on pulling a boat the 4.56 gears and 32s should work great together for that. I still wouldn't run 4.56 with 31s. That is WAAAAAAAAY too low, even for towing.

won't be too bad, some xj's that came with the towing package had 29 inch tires and 3.73 gears. so 30's and 4.10, 31's and 4.56, meh. maybe a little low, but if you're not driving 50 miles or more on the freeway both ways, should be tolerable... that's what overdrive is for, right??? haha

me, i'm gonna go to 4.88 with 36's. and 4:1 terra low kit. it's really all about the crawl ratio, isn't it?
i would like 5.13's when i go full size axles.

now you guys have me wondering if i should just go with 4:10's and upgrade my intake to a newer ho intake for a little more hp...
i will drive to meet and greets and some of them are as far as 100 miles, so maybe i should go with 4:10's
