Reciever Installation help
I am installing a receiver on my 98 XJ and having some trouble. I got it off of a friend and he had all of the hard wear...nuts and bolts...but he couldn't remember how they all went and I cant quite figure it out. Is there a diagram of what to put where? or does anybody know?

Basically you have a receiver that goes up around the gas tank and the mounts run parallel with the bottom of the uni body. Then if you pull the bumper off you can see into the uni body rail and there is usually a strap with 4 welded nuts that slides into the uni body rail so when you put a bolt through the hitch/uni body it threads into one of the 4 nuts on the strap that goes in the unibody rail. I made my mounting straps and bought new hardware when I installed mine (it was used)

See if you can draw a mental image of what it looks like. The left of the strap pictured would go closest to the rear bumper and right is toward the front of the vehicle. Most hitches only have 4 mounting holes (starting from the left of the picture) that's all I used.

Now I just need to wire it up for the trailer lights. I read in my owners manual that there is some sort of splice behind one of the tail lights. I haven't had time to tear it apart to see. Would anybody know if this is true?

Ok. All you need to do is run down to the local auo part store an pick up a plug and play wiring kit. It is two plugs with a 4 prong plug on the other end. Make sure it's for the correct year jeep. 97-01 is different. The plug in is located behind the spare tire panel. Pull spare tire and the panel off and there should be a cluster of wires. They only plug in one way so it's self explanatory. Plug in and go any questions just ask
